My new obsession is definitely Pina Bausch and her quriky chreography, infusing themes of questionable gender identities, sadness and humour, and elaborate set pieces, like a mammoth hippo in the middle of the stage, or a whole field of flowers in 'Cravos'. The soundtracks to her pieces are also exceptionally chosen and always rather sensual and Spanish in nature. Her female dancers dance in elegant, sometimes diaphanous ball gowns with stilettos. She streotyes her women wit their clothing, yet she juxtaposes this generalisation with thei movement, like jumping aggressively through the air and on top of things. NOt to mention her male dancers often dorn the female garb of dresses and skirts.
